Many federal agencies conduct SBIR programs to increase private sector commercialization of technology developed through Federal R&D, increase small business participation in Federal R&D, and improve the Federal Government's dissemination of information about the SBIR program. The U.S. Department of Energy's SBIR program funding totaled nearly $600 million over its first fifteen years, with an estimated budget for FY 2001 of $81 million.

OLETC, a program of the National Institute of Justice's Office of Science and Technology, assists in the commercialization of innovative technology for use by the law enforcement and corrections community. OLETC's primary objective is to bring research and private industry together to put affordable, market-driven technologies into the hands of law enforcement and corrections personnel. OLETC actively solicits manufacturers to commercialize technologies based on requirements identified by the Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and its Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Advisory Council as well as from law enforcement and corrections practitioners.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office maintains an extensive site that includes a database that enables online patent searches. You can also download patent application materials. For example, you'll find patent statistics and links to patent offices in other countries around the world. It also publishes news, announcements of public interest, a complete telephone directory, address listings for the PTO, and patent agents and attorneys registered with the PTO.

On its web site, the SBA provides specific contact information for its many local offices and resources, information on financing, starting a business, training opportunities, government contracting opportunities for small businesses, access to SCORE consulting, and many other useful things. One particularly useful area on the SBA web site is at the page for the Small Business Development Centers. You find listings for local offices (addresses and phones) as well as a set of links to online resources, tutorials, worksheets, and tips. Whether or not you live in the U.S., you will likely find the SBA site a useful stop for picking up information on starting, financing, or expanding your small business.
