Core Team
The core faculty at Mohawk Research is composed of skilled specialists in product development, business start-ups, licensing, partnership formation, business management, and marketing. Continuous involvement in these areas provides them with first-hand knowledge of current trends and practices and infuses their teaching with timely examples.

Marcia L. Rorke, Ph.D. (Innovation and Product Development Management) Ms. Rorke is the Principal and Founder of Mohawk Research Corporation and has over 20 years of experience in guiding the management of innovative technologies. She is actively involved in research, curriculum, and training materials development, as well as program design and evaluation. She previously provided training in classroom management, worked in bilingual/bicultural education, and evaluated methods for stimulating innovation. The author of numerous papers and articles, Ms. Rorke is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Inventors' Council of Chicago and the Independent Business Association of Illinois. She is a member and past Trustee of the Licensing Executives Society. Ms. Rorke holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from George Washington University.

Don Kelly (Intellectual Property Management). Mr. Kelly is a patent expert with more than 40 years of experience in the field. He heads Intellectual Asset Management Associates, LLC, a patent agency and intellectual property consultancy firm in Alexandria, VA. Don’s career included many years with the US Patent and Trademark Office where he served in positions ranging from Patent Examiner to Chief of Staff. In 2000 he left public service to head the non-profit Academy of Applied Science and team patent law at Franklin Pierce Law Center. He lectures worldwide on behalf of the International Intellectual Property Institute in Washington, DC and is a member of the Licensing Executives Society professional development faculty. His column “Out to Launch” explores entrepreneurship issues and is regularly featured in IP-Frontline e-magazine. He received a BS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from VA Tech University and is registered to practice patent law before the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Donald H. Maund (Technology Development) – Mr. Maund has over 30 years comprehensive experience in product and applications development for domestic and international business enterprises. As an independent consultant, Mr. Maund has been involved in industrial product development and marketing, new venture start-ups, and business recovery activities for airlines, aerospace companies, and industrial product manufacturers. Previously, he held progressively senior positions in operations planning and technical project management with Bell Labs, Matson Navigation, American Airlines, and Ford Motor Company. He holds a Master of Business Administration with Distinction and a Master of Science degree in Physics.

Brian K. O'Riordan (Licensing) – Mr. O’Riordan has over 30 years experience in new technology evaluation, business development, planning, and licensing. His industrial and consulting business experience spans a broad range of technologies, commercialization environments, and geography – including negotiations in over 30 countries. He was Manager of Licensing and then Director of Commercialization and Technology for Sohio and subsequently led the technology transfer subsidiary of Case Western Reserve University. As the founding principal of the Springbourne Consultancy, he now specializes in early-stage technology valuation, planning, and deployment. He majored in physical chemistry and holds a Masters degree in Industrial Administration from Purdue University.

S.J. Price, Ph.D. (Marketing) – Dr. Price has over 20 years of experience in new product and new business research and development. He is the former Vice President and Director of Licensing for the DowBrands subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company and served as Director of New Product Development and Vice President for Research and Development at Texize. Degreed in organic chemistry (MA, Ph.D., Clemson), he is the founder of the SJP Group, an independent consulting firm which offers training in technology management, acquisition, and licensing for corporations as well as individual inventors.

James P. Shipley (Organizational Development and Financing) - Dr. Shipley has 35 years experience in executing, leading, organizing, financing, and growing technology and engineering endeavors. He created and managed Columbia Basin Ventures LLC, a venture capital firm for growing technology-based businesses in Washington State. He was a Vice President of Fluor Daniel, Inc./Fluor Daniel Technologies, which focused on corporate venturing. From 1987 - 89, he was Senior Advisor to the Hon. Richard T. Kennedy, Ambassador-at-Large for Nonproliferation Policy and Nuclear Energy Affairs in the US State Department. Dr. Shipley's career includes service at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he headed technology and policy development initiatives for treaty verification, nonproliferation, counterterrorism, and environmental management programs. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of New Mexico.

John W. Stewart (Manufacturing and Safety)- Mr. Stewart works with DuPont Safety Resources y consulting with manufacturing and transportation organizations and by presenting seminars to establish and improve systems for the management of industrial safety. He also consults with manufacturing companies, engineering and management firms, and government agencies in energy engineering and energy conservation. John worked for DuPont for more than 30 years and held technical as well as management positions in manufacturing production, process technical support, maintenance, research, development, project engineering technical marketing, product development and employee relations. His experience includes nuclear reactor safety and operations, applied mathematics and computing, capital project management, and energy engineering. John’s DuPont assignments included nuclear operations, electronic imaging product development, process engineering/design, and engineering consultation. He holds a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering.

Sam W. Westbrook III (Partnership Management)-As an executive in aerospace and high technology industries, Mr. Westbrook successfully managed to adjust the focus of several companies, expanding market opportunities and finding profitable commercial applications for new and existing defense technologies. Now a management consultant in Washington state, his distinguished service in the U.S. Air Force included assignments as an F-111 fighter pilot, policy analyst for Pentagon and National Security Council staffs, and flag officer at the U.S. Air Force Academy, his alma mater. He holds advanced degrees from Oxford University, where he did theoretical work in plasma physics.

Allan H. Johnston (Marketing/Technology Transfer) - Mr. Johnston has over 30 years of experience in large as well as small companies that market package goods products directly to the consumer. He is the former Vice President of Licensing and Acquisitions and Associate Vice President of Marketing for the Block Drug Company. He consummated numerous acquisition and licensing agreements while at Block Drug. He also held marketing positions with General Foods and RJR Industries where he managed well-known brand name products and launched new brands. He is the founder of AHJ Consulting, an independent consulting firm that provides services related to technology transfer. As the Chair of the Education Committee of the Licensing Executives Society, he directed the development, teaching and scheduling of a ground-breaking 4-day course entitled Fundamentals of Intellectual Asset Management. He holds an MBA from Columbia University.
